Background

In 1078 Su Shi was the governor of Xuzhou. That spring there was a bad drought, so he went to Shitan Pool, about ten kilometers east of the city, to pray for rain. Later the rain came, and he went back to the pool to give thanks. On the road he wrote five ci to this tune, and this is the fourth. His note says he wrote five pieces on the way to give thanks for rain at Shitan. All of them describe the country scenes he saw along the road.

The mood意境

The first half is like a short film of a village. First, jujube blossoms fall on him with a soft pattering. Then silk-reeling wheels whir all over the village, as farm families busily make silk. Then someone sells cucumbers under an old willow. There are sounds, colors and people, full of early-summer life. The second half is about the poet himself. He has had too much wine and is sleepy, the road is long, the sun is hot, and he is thirsty for tea. So he knocks on a farmer's door. A high official asks for tea like any passer-by. It is written in a light, funny way, and it shows how close he felt to ordinary people.
