Background

Yue Fei was a famous general of the Southern Song who fought the Jin army. The Jin had taken a large part of the north, and Yue Fei longed to win it back. But Emperor Gaozong and the chief minister Qin Hui wanted peace with the Jin and did not back him. This lyric shows the sorrow in his heart. One view dates it to around 1138, when the Song and the Jin were talking peace. The exact date is not settled.

The poet作者

Yue Fei (1103–1142), also called Pengju, came from Tangyin in today's Henan. His army, the Yue Family Army, won many battles. Later Qin Hui and others had him killed on a made-up charge, when he was only thirty-nine. Few of his lyrics survive. "The River All Red" is bold and stirring. This one is low and quiet. It shows the loneliness of a hero no one understands.

The mood意境

The first stanza shows a sleepless autumn night. The crickets keep chirping and wake the general from his dream, a dream of battlefields and home a thousand miles away. It is midnight. He walks round the steps alone. No one is about, only dim moonlight. The second stanza tells what troubles him. His hair is white, his great task is not done, and he cannot go home. He wants to speak through his zither, but few understand him. Even if the strings snapped, no one would listen. The lyric does not shout. It sighs softly, and we feel how lonely and helpless the hero is.
