Background

This lyric is about missing someone in late spring. As spring nears its end, the speaker drinks to ease the sorrow and climbs a high tower to wait for a letter from someone far away. But no letter comes. The speaker may be a woman missing a loved one, or the poet himself. The year it was written and the person it is about are not known.

The mood意境

The first half paints the end of spring. The wind whirls willow fluff, fallen petals cover the ground, and their scent comes in gusts. The scene is lovely, but the lovely things are passing away. As for the person, new wine is piled on old wine not yet slept off, and the spring sorrow is no less than the year before. The second half is about waiting. The butterflies have gone, the orioles have flown, and there is nowhere even to ask for news. Standing in a high tower across the water, the speaker gazes until their eyes ache, but no letter comes. The last line is quiet: the sun sinks slowly, and night is coming. Another day of waiting ends in nothing, and the sorrow deepens with the dusk.
