Background

Caishi Point is in today's Ma'anshan, Anhui. The Emei Pavilion was built on it, and from there one can see the Heaven's Gate Hills on both banks of the Yangtze. Since ancient times it was a key and dangerous pass on the river. This lyric is usually thought to come from the time He Zhu served as an official in Taiping prefecture, near today's Dangtu in Anhui. The exact year is not certain. Looking at a place armies once fought over, now visited only by idle men enjoying the moon and the flute, he was filled with feeling.

The poet作者

He Zhu (1052–1125) was a Northern Song lyric poet. He was tall, bold and chivalrous, yet held only small posts all his life. His lyrics come in many styles, some bold and some tender. Because of a famous line about rain when the plums turn yellow, he was nicknamed Plum He.

The mood意境

The first half opens with great force. Niuzhu and Heaven's Gate are steep and dangerous, dividing south from north, and great powers fought over them for ages. Then comes a turn: the mist clears, and those who climb up now are only idle men. Putting old battles beside today's ease makes us feel the power of time. The second half is at night. The moon rises, the tide calms, the waves sparkle, and someone plays a flute. Wind fills the railings, and the poet quietly counts the watch beats from the distant city. The quieter he makes it, the more we feel that history has gone far away, leaving only the river, the moon and the sound of the night watch.
