Background

In 1056, Ouyang Xiu's friend Liu Chang was about to become governor of Yangzhou, and Ouyang wrote this ci to see him off. Eight years earlier Ouyang himself had served in Yangzhou. He built Pingshan Hall outside the city and planted a willow in front of it with his own hands. Now that his friend was going there, he remembered the place and wrote this. He was about fifty that year, so he calls himself "a worn-out old man".

05

The poet作者

Ouyang Xiu (1007–1072), also called the Old Drunkard, was a great Northern Song writer and one of the Eight Masters of Tang and Song prose. He wrote the famous "Pavilion of the Old Drunkard". He served in office for many years and was sent away several times, but he stayed open-hearted. Some of his ci are tender, while others, like this one, are bold and free.

The mood意境

The first half shows Pingshan Hall. The railing leans against the clear sky, so the hall must be high. The far hills are faint, now there, now gone, and the view is wide and misty. "Now there, now gone" is borrowed from a line by Wang Wei, and it fits perfectly. Then he thinks of the willow he planted himself and asks how many springs have passed since he left. His longing is all in that question. The second half turns to his friend: ten thousand words with one sweep of the brush, a thousand cups at one sitting. A gifted, bold, carefree governor jumps off the page. The last two lines are half a joke: enjoy life while you are young; look at me, already an old man. There is a sigh inside the laugh, and good wishes for his friend too.
