Background

Dīng yǒu in the title is a year, 1297. Yuán xī means the night of the Lantern Festival. By then the Southern Song had been gone for almost twenty years, and the Yuan dynasty ruled. At this Lantern Festival, Liu Chenweng remembered how lively the festival had been under the Song, and wrote this lyric. It is usually read this way: the first stanza shows the festival in Bianjing, the Northern Song capital; the second shows it in Lin'an, the Southern Song capital; the third shows the lonely years after the Song fell. Liu Chenweng died in this same year.

The poet作者

Liu Chenweng (1232–1297), also called Xuxi, was a lyric poet of the late Southern Song from Luling, today's Ji'an in Jiangxi. When he passed the highest exam, his answer criticized Jia Sidao, the powerful minister of the day, so he was ranked low. After the Song fell, he refused to serve the Yuan and lived quietly at home. He wrote many lyrics longing for the lost country. The Lantern Festival and spring were themes he often used to carry that grief.

The mood意境

This lyric has three stanzas, like three pictures that grow darker and darker. The first is the brightest. In the moonlight, lovely women ride out to see the lanterns, flags pass through the streets, song and dance never stop on the towers, and young men ask their sweethearts to go home with them. The second opens with old people's tears, because the Northern Song is gone. Yet soon Lin'an is lively again: lamplight shines on the mansions, moonlight lies on the lake, and couples are together. The third is the darkest. Now the Song is gone too. Children can only hear the old stories. Spring comes, but people only want to sleep. By the lamp someone tells of the past, and tears fall quietly. The last line says those splendid days are now as far away as heaven from earth, seen only in dreams. The livelier the memories, the lonelier the present, and the deeper the grief for a lost country.
