Background

Yang Yuhuan was first the wife of Prince Shou, a son of Emperor Xuanzong. The histories say the emperor wanted her for himself. To cover this up, he first had her become a Daoist nun named Taizhen, and some years later made her his consort. This poem is about that. The Jiling Terrace was a place for worshipping the gods in the Huaqing Palace and should be pure and solemn. By placing this secret palace affair there, the poet makes his mockery clear.

The poet作者

Zhang Hu was a Tang poet who never held a high post and traveled widely. He wrote many palace poems, poems about life at court. One that begins with home three thousand miles away and twenty years in the deep palace is very famous. His palace poems say little on the surface but carry deep meaning.

The mood意境

The first two lines are lovely: sunlight slants across the terrace of the gods, and red flowers open with dew, like a fairyland. The last two lines tell something shameful. Last night the emperor made her a nun, and today she walks smiling through his curtain. Becoming a nun should mean leaving the world for a pure life, but here it is a step into the emperor's rooms. The poet adds no comment. He just sets the holy place beside the deed, and readers see what he is mocking.
