Background创作背景

Zhong'an in the title is usually taken to be the pen name of one of the poet's friends, and the old garden was that friend's. The poet passes by boat again and remembers the lively days of flowers and wine with friends in the garden. Now the garden is bare and the friends have scattered. Wang Yisun lived through the fall of the Song dynasty, and some readers feel the poem's loneliness also hides grief for the lost country. We do not know the year it was written.

题目里的“中庵”，一般认为是作者一位朋友的号，“故园”是这位朋友从前的园子。作者坐船重新经过这里，想起当年和朋友们在园中赏花喝酒的热闹，如今园子荒凉，朋友们也四散各地。王沂孙生活在宋朝灭亡前后，一说这首词的冷落和感伤里，也藏着对故国的怀念。写作年份不清楚。

The poet作者

Wang Yisun (about 1230 – about 1291) was a ci poet from Kuaiji (today's Shaoxing, Zhejiang) who lived as the Song gave way to the Yuan. After the Song fell, he and other poets loyal to it often wrote ci together, using objects and scenes to hold their grief for the lost country. His ci are quiet and deep, and rarely say his feelings straight out.

王沂孙（约1230—约1291），字圣与，号碧山，宋末元初的词人，会稽（今浙江绍兴）人。宋朝灭亡后，他和一些遗民词人常常一起写词，借咏物来寄托亡国的伤痛。他的词含蓄深沉，常常不直接说出心事。

The mood意境

The poem cuts back and forth between an old photograph and the bare garden in front of him. In the photograph: green shade over the gate, clog prints on the steps, wine on the sleeves, noise and laughter. Now: the garden is a cold autumn place, and the friends who shared the flowers have scattered like clouds in the wind. The second stanza pushes the distance farther and farther. The water is far, the hills beyond it are farther, and even dreams are too short to reach them. At dusk he touches the old trees and feels that the year, and his life, are nearing evening. At last only a few red flowers still 'know' the garden's sadness. People have forgotten, but the flowers remember. That hurts more than simply saying he is lonely.
