This follows the text in common anthologies. In line 2 the corpus has hōng lú (glowing lamps) where common editions have hóng lián (red lotus), meaning lotus-shaped lanterns. Both readings are found in old editions. The subtitle “The Lantern Festival” is added in common anthologies; the corpus gives only the tune name.

Background

Shang Yuan is the Lantern Festival, on the fifteenth night of the first lunar month. That night every home hangs lanterns and people go out to see them. In this lyric the poet spends the festival away from the capital. Watching the lanterns before him, he remembers how lively the festival was in Bianjing, the capital. It is usually thought he wrote it while serving as an official outside the capital. Because it mentions girls of Chu, some say it was written in Jingzhou, others in Lishui; the exact year is not agreed.

The poet作者

Zhou Bangyan (1056–1121), also called Meicheng, was from Qiantang, today's Hangzhou in Zhejiang. He was a famous Northern Song writer of ci lyrics. He knew music deeply, and under Emperor Huizong he ran the court music office. His lyrics are carefully worded and strict in their music. He often wove lines from Tang poems into his own, and the dust following the horses in this lyric is one example.

The mood意境

The first half shows the festival night in front of him. Up close, candles melt in the wind, lanterns are wet with dew, and lamplight mixes with moonlight. Looking up, the clouds have cleared, moonlight flows over the roofs like water, and the moon is so bright it seems the goddess might step down. Then come the people in the street: girls in simple, graceful clothes, flutes and drums, sweet scent all along the road. The second half turns to memory: the capital long ago, a thousand gates lit like day, fine carriages, young men riding after them, laughter everywhere. Now the festival is the same each year, but his heart has changed. In the end he rides home before the music is over. The bright festival and his lonely heart are set side by side, and the brighter the scene, the lonelier he feels.
