Background

Liu Changqing was demoted and sent away twice in his life. He wrote this poem while passing through Changsha during an exile. Which exile is not agreed: one view says the first, on the way south to Nanba; another says the second, in the Dali years under Emperor Daizong. Changsha had the old house of Jia Yi of the Western Han. Jia Yi was gifted, yet he too was sent away to Changsha. Liu Changqing had also been falsely accused and punished. Seeing Jia Yi's old home, he felt their fates were alike and wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Liu Changqing (about 726 to about 790) was a Tang poet. He was especially good at five-character poems and was called the Great Wall of Five-Character Verse. As an official he was upright and blunt, offended powerful people, and was demoted and sent away twice. So his poems often carry a lonely, disappointed mood.

06

The mood意境

On the surface the poem is about Jia Yi, but it is also about the poet. Autumn grass, cold woods and a low sun make everything bleak, like Jia Yi's life back then and the poet's mood now. Line five is clever. If even a wise ruler like Emperor Wen treated Jia Yi so coldly, what about the emperor of today? He does not finish the thought, but the meaning is clear. Line six says the river has no feeling: Jia Yi mourned Qu Yuan, who could not hear him, and now the poet mourns Jia Yi, who cannot hear either. The last question, "What brought you to this edge of the world?", is asked of Jia Yi and of himself, full of hurt and a sense of injustice.
