Background

This is a poem about one thing, a kind of poem that describes a single object. Li Qiao wrote many such poems, often with one-word titles like "Wind", "Moon" and "Snow". The word "wind" never appears in this poem, yet every line is about the wind. It is like a riddle whose answer is the title. It is now taught in primary school. We do not know exactly when it was written.

The poet作者

Li Qiao (about 645–about 714), also called Jushan, came from Zhaozhou, in today's Hebei. He was a poet of the early Tang and once served as chief minister. He and Su Weidao and two others were known as the "Four Literary Friends". He was very good at poems about objects and wrote more than a hundred, most with one-word titles. "Wind" is the most famous of them.

The mood意境

Wind cannot be seen or touched, so how do you write about it? The poet is clever. He does not describe the wind itself, only what it does. In autumn it blows the leaves down. In spring it blows the flowers open. On the river it lifts tall waves. In the bamboo grove it bends the stems. As we read, we can "see" the wind. The first two lines are about time, autumn and spring, showing the wind is there all year. The last two lines are about places, river and bamboo, showing its power everywhere. The lines pair up neatly and have a strong rhythm. It is like a riddle, waiting for you to call out the answer: "Wind!"
