Background

"Songs Below the Frontier" is an old ballad title, usually used for poems about life and war on the border. Wang Changling is generally thought to have travelled to the northwest frontier as a young man, in the Kaiyuan years. There he saw for himself how bleak the border was and how hard the soldiers' lives were. This is the first of a set of four poems. Through the scenes along the road, the poet shares what he thinks of frontier war.

The poet作者

Wang Changling (about 698–about 757) was a Tang poet, best at seven-character quatrains and called a master of the form. He wrote many famous frontier poems, such as the one that begins "The bright moon of Qin, the passes of Han". He never rose high in office. He was twice sent away to remote posts, and he was killed during the chaos of war.

06

The mood意境

The first four lines are a painting of the frontier in autumn. Cicadas still sing, but the mulberry grove is bare. Back and forth along the road it is cold and empty, with only withered yellow reeds. The scene feels lonely and tired. Lines five and six state a hard truth: since ancient times, so many brave men came to the border and in the end grew old in the dust, and few ever came home with glory. The last two lines are the poet's advice: do not be like those young adventurers, riding fine horses and bragging, thinking war is grand. The poem shows no battle, yet it lets us see the hardship and the cost behind war.
