The corpus text differs from the common text in three places. It has xiāo written with the 'melt away' character in lines 2 and 8, where most editions use the 'metal melting' character; both are read xiāo. Its line 6 has 'sprinkle' instead of 'wine', a slip made when the text was converted by machine. And its last line says 'a person as thin as' with the word for 'like', where the common text uses 'thinner than'. This page follows the common text.

How to read it读音

薄bó
Here bó. In everyday words like 'thin pancake' it is read báo, but in written words like 'thin mist' it is read bó.
In chóng yáng (the Double Ninth) this character means 'double, twice', so it is read chóng, not zhòng.

Background

This is one of Li Qingzhao's early works. She and her husband Zhao Mingcheng loved each other dearly, but he was often away serving as an official, so they had to live apart. It is usually thought that she wrote this on a Double Ninth Festival, alone at home and missing him, and sent it to him far away. A book from the Yuan dynasty tells a story: Zhao Mingcheng wanted to outdo her, wrote fifty poems of his own, and mixed hers in to show a friend. The friend said the best part was the last three lines. This story may not be true.

The poet作者

Li Qingzhao (1084–around 1155), who called herself the Lay Scholar Yi'an, was the most famous woman writer of ci in the Song dynasty. In the first half of her life she lived in peace and collected old bronzes, stone rubbings and art with her husband. Her lyrics then were fresh and delicate, often about parting and longing. Later war and her husband's death made her writing sad and bleak. This lyric is a famous work from her early years.

The mood意境

The first half moves from day to midnight. The sky is grey, the incense burns away bit by bit, and time crawls. A festival should be lively, but she is alone. At midnight the chill seeps into the bed-tent, and into her heart too. The second half shows her drinking by the chrysanthemums at dusk. Their smell fills her sleeves, but there is no one to share it with. At last a gust of west wind lifts the curtain and shows a person thinner than the flowers. The chrysanthemums are slender in the autumn wind, and she has grown thinner day by day from missing him. The single word 'thin' turns an invisible longing into something you can see. That is why these last lines are remembered to this day.
