Background

This ci shows the poet meeting a singing girl for the first time at a banquet and being drawn to her. At Song banquets, singing girls often performed songs, and poets often wrote lyrics for them. Who she was and when the ci was written are not known.

The poet作者

Zhang Xian (990–1078) was a Northern Song ci poet who lived to almost ninety. He was famous for writing about shadows, as in his line about clouds parting and flowers playing with their shadows in the moonlight, so people called him "Three-Shadows Zhang". He wrote many short ci for banquets and singing girls, fresh in language and often with a line that surprises you.

The mood意境

This ci is like a portrait. First the skirt: silk, stitched with two butterflies, quietly hinting at a wish to be a pair. Then the place they met: a banquet by the east pond. Her makeup is light, like a little flower that does not show off, with a hint of spring. The second half says every part of her is lovely, and everyone praises her willow-slim waist. The last two lines are the most famous and the most mysterious. Yesterday at dusk the hills grew dim, and when she came, her clothes seemed to carry clouds from the hills. Suddenly she seems like a fairy stepping out of the mountains. The poet never says outright how beautiful she is. With one cloud, he leaves us endless room to imagine.
