The lines match the textbook. In old books this poem sits inside Wang Wei's set of poems called the Wangchuan Collection, so the data gives its title as "Wangchuan Collection: The Lodge in the Bamboo Grove". Textbooks use only "The Lodge in the Bamboo Grove".

Background

In middle age Wang Wei bought a country house at Wangchuan in Lantian, near Chang'an, and often rested there. He and his friend Pei Di each wrote a poem about twenty spots around the house. Together these became the Wangchuan Collection. The Lodge in the Bamboo Grove was one of those spots, a small hut among the bamboo. This poem is about a moonlit night he spent there alone. The year is not known.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701–761; some say 699–761) was a famous Tang poet, and also a painter and musician. His poems about hills and streams are calm and clean. The Song writer Su Shi said there were paintings in his poems and poems in his paintings. In later life he followed Buddhism and liked a quiet life in the hills.

The mood意境

Picture a bamboo grove at night. The bamboo is tall and thick, and all around is still. The poet sits alone inside, plays the qin for a while, then lifts his head and whistles long and loud. No one hears him and no one bothers him, yet he does not feel lonely at all. The bright moon seems to understand him and comes through the leaves to shine on him. The music and the whistling make the night feel even quieter, and the moonlight makes the grove feel even more peaceful. The whole poem is about feeling free and making friends with nature, and reading it calms the heart.
