Title: the source text lacks the opening word "Seeing Off"; textbooks include it, and some editions end the title with Shuchuan instead of Shuzhou. In line six the source uses an old variant form of the character for neighbor, and in line seven a different character for the fork in the road. This page follows the textbook in each case.

Background

Wang Bo wrote this poem in Chang'an when seeing off a friend surnamed Du. The friend was going to Shuzhou, near today's Chongzhou in Sichuan, to serve as a shàofǔ, the Tang name for a county officer in charge of law and order. We no longer know his full name, nor the exact year of the poem. Most farewell poems are full of sadness, but this one tells the friend not to be sad, because true friendship does not fear distance. The famous lines about friends being neighbors even at the ends of the earth borrow an idea from the poet Cao Zhi, who wrote that for a man with big dreams, ten thousand miles away is still next door.

The mood意境

The opening lines paint a huge picture. On one side is Chang'an, guarded by the lands of Sanqin. On the other are the far-off Five Fords of Shu in the wind and haze. The place of parting and the place the friend is going are joined in one view. Lines three and four speak from the heart: we are both away from home serving as officials, so I understand how you feel. Lines five and six are famous to this day: as long as you have a true friend, even the ends of the earth feel as close as next door. The last two lines tell the friend not to cry at the crossroads like a child. The poem has no tears. It feels wide and strong, like a good friend patting your shoulder and saying, "It's fine. Our hearts are together."
