Background

This ci is about missing someone on an autumn night after they have parted. The poet cannot sleep late at night. The lamp is nearly out, it is raining outside, and the drops fall on the wutong leaves. He remembers playing the se, burning incense and singing with that person long ago. Then he looks at himself now, alone in the wind and rain, and his tears fall. The ci does not say who the person was, and we cannot tell what year it was written. The midnight rain on wutong leaves recalls a famous line by the late Tang poet Wen Tingyun about wutong trees and rain at the third watch.

The poet作者

Zhou Zizhi (1082 to about 1155), also called the Hermit of Zhupo, came from Xuancheng in today's Anhui. He was a Southern Song ci poet. He was poor when young and became an official late in life. His ci are fresh and natural, rarely using hard old stories. He liked to use the scene before his eyes to show the feeling in his heart, so reading him feels like hearing someone speak softly.

The mood意境

The first stanza is a close-up of an autumn night. The lamp has only a speck of red left, the room has suddenly turned cold, and the midnight rain patters on the wutong leaves outside. Rain is only rain, yet the poet hears every leaf and every drop speaking of parting, because that person is on his mind. The second stanza jumps back to the past: tuning the se, stirring the incense, singing together, warm and happy. Then it jumps back to now. It is night again, but in the wind and rain of the west tower, and he is alone. The last line is strong. Back then a song was needed to move him; now, without any song at all, the tears come. Cold and warm, now and then: all the longing lives in these contrasts.
