How to read it读音

子zǐ: In yàn zǐ (swallow), the last character is unstressed in everyday speech, but in verse it is usually read zǐ.燕子：口语里“子”读轻声 zi，读诗词时一般读 zǐ。
塞sài: In sài yàn (frontier geese), the character means the northern frontier and is read sài, not sāi or sè.塞雁：从北方边塞飞来的大雁。“塞”指边塞，读 sài。

Background创作背景

This is a lyric in praise of plum blossoms, written about the plum alone. No reliable record tells when or why it was written. The plum here grows by the river, beside bamboo and a thatched hut's fence. The god of spring does not cherish it, and the swallows miss it, yet it still blooms freely and smells sweet from afar. Sources disagree about the author. It is usually given to Li Bing; one view says it was Chao Chongzhi.

这是一首咏梅词，就是专门写梅花的词。写作的时间和缘由都没有留下可靠的记载。词里的梅花长在江边竹林旁、茅屋篱笆边，不被春神爱惜，也被燕子错过，却照样开得潇洒、香得清远。这首词的作者有不同说法，一般认为是李邴，一说是晁冲之。

The poet作者

Li Bing (1085–1146), courtesy name Hanlao, was a Song lyric poet. He passed the highest level of the imperial exams in 1106, under the Northern Song, and early in the Southern Song he served as a vice chief minister. Later he lived quietly in Quanzhou for more than ten years. Few of his lyrics survive, and this one about plum blossoms is the best known.

李邴（1085—1146），字汉老，宋代词人。北宋崇宁五年（1106年）考中进士，南宋初年做过参知政事，也就是副宰相，后来在泉州闲居了十多年。他的词留下来的不多，这首写梅花的词最有名。

The mood意境

This lyric is about plum blossoms, but it also seems to describe a person of noble character. The plum blooms in the coldest time. The god of spring does not care for it, the swallows find it too cold to visit, and only the geese flying north have seen it flower. It does not grow before a grand hall of jade, but by a little stream and a thatched hut. The old friend who understood it and wrote poems for it has gone, and there is no one to share the moonlit river scene with. But the ending turns: the plum's fragrance has not faded at all, and its beauty never needed anyone to know of it. Here we understand that true goodness does not depend on praise.

这首词写梅花，也像在写一个品格高洁的人。梅花开在最冷的时候，春神不心疼它，燕子也嫌冷不来看，只有北归的大雁见过它开花。它不长在华丽的玉堂前，而是长在小溪边、茅屋旁。懂它、为它写诗的老朋友走了，月下江边的美景也没人可以分享。可是结尾一转：梅花的清香一点没少，它的美本来就不需要别人知道。读到这里，我们会明白：真正的好，不靠别人夸奖。
