Background

The title says it was written at Huadu Temple, where Wu Wenying was staying. One view places the temple in Hangzhou. Wu Wenying had lived in Suzhou for about ten years, and his home and the people he loved were there. When autumn came he was away from home. Looking at the lotus, the crows, the sunset and the autumn hills, he thought of his home by Changmen Gate and wrote this lyric of homesickness.

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 – about 1260), also called Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a Southern Song lyric poet. He never held high office. For most of his life he worked as an aide to officials, writing letters and giving advice, and he moved around Suzhou and Hangzhou. His lyrics choose words with great care and pack in many images, like finely detailed paintings.

The mood意境

The first half shows one day turning from dusk to night. Red lotus keeps the poet company at the railing. Crows fly home carrying the sunset. After a shower, leaves fall from the wutong tree. The moon rises, the air cools, and the fan is put away. Even the birds go home, but he cannot; that is the first layer of sadness. The second half tells his heart. Dreams are short and the road is long. Putting "narrow" next to "wide" makes us feel at once how far away home is. The faint hills outside the window look like the frowning brows of someone he loves. In the end he can only ask the wild geese to carry a letter, to a few small rooms by Changmen Gate. The detail is plain and warm, and it makes the longing feel real.
