The source text titles it Half-Dead Tung Tree, a name He Zhu gave to the Partridge Sky tune, taken from a line in this lyric. In the seventh line the source writes lǒng (grave mound) with a variant form; here it uses the common form.

Background

This lyric mourns the poet's late wife. He Zhu's wife, of the Zhao family, lived with him in Suzhou and later died there. From the lyric we see she was hardworking and caring, mending his clothes late at night. Later, passing through Suzhou again, He Zhu thought about how they had come together but he had to leave alone, and he wrote this lyric. Accounts differ on the exact year. Like Su Shi's lyric for his own late wife, it is one of the best-known Song lyrics of mourning.

The poet作者

He Zhu (1052–1125), courtesy name Fanghui, was a Northern Song lyric poet. He was a distant grandson in the family of Empress He, wife of the first Song emperor, and he married a woman of the imperial clan. He was tall with a bluish face, so people called him Ghost-Head He. His lyrics come in many styles, some bold and some tender. A famous line about rain in plum-ripening season earned him the nickname Plum He.

The mood意境

The first line says that the places are still there, but the person is gone, and everything has changed. The second line is a question: we came together, so why can we not go back together? It is a simple question with no answer, and it hurts to read. Then come two pictures: a tung tree half killed by frost, and a white-headed mandarin duck that has lost its mate. Both show the poet losing his wife in old age. The second half shows the grass on the grave and the dew that dries so fast, reminding us how short life is. The last two lines move us most. On the empty bed he hears the rain, and no one will ever again lift the lamp wick late at night to mend his clothes. He never describes what his wife looked like. He only shows her mending clothes, and all their love is in that small act.
