Background

In his forties Xin Qiji was dismissed from office and went home to live by Daihu Lake in Shangrao, Jiangxi. The title says he wrote this lyric after coming back from Ehu and getting over an illness. Ehu, Goose Lake, is a famous mountain nearby in today's Yanshan County, with a temple on it. Sources differ on the exact year. At the end of summer, just recovered, he sat in his house by the stream, watching lotuses and water birds. He thought of being left with nothing to do, and of his body growing old, and wrote this.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), also called Jiaxuan, was a great Southern Song poet. He was born in the north, which the Jin had taken. As a young man he joined an uprising against the Jin and then came south to the Song. He wanted with all his heart to win back the north, but he was seldom given real power. From middle age he was dismissed again and again, and lived for many years in the Jiangxi countryside. Most of his lyrics are bold and strong, but some are soft and delicate.

The mood意境

The first half paints a scene with feelings hidden in it. The mat is cool, the clouds are gone, autumn is coming. The red lotuses lean together as if drunk, and the white bird is silent as if sad. Really it is the poet who is drunk and sad. The second half uses two old stories. Yin Hao, dismissed from office, could not let go of his anger. Sima Tu, living in retirement, called his pavilion "Let It Go". Xin Qiji says: stop being angry, let it go; life among the hills is fine too. But the last two lines show his true heart. He does not know how much strength he has lost; he does not even feel like climbing the stairs. A man who longed to ride into battle now cannot be bothered to climb stairs. He says it lightly, and that makes it all the sadder.
