The commonly taught text writes the cup as yù zhōng with the simple form of the character, and the second line has pàn què with the character meaning to risk everything. The source text uses an older form of zhōng left over from conversion, and a similar-looking character usually read pīn instead of pàn.

Background

This lyric is about the poet meeting a singing girl again after many years apart. The first half remembers a lively banquet long ago, where she sang, danced and poured him wine. The second half tells of missing her after they parted, and his joy at seeing her again tonight. We no longer know who she was or in which year it was written.

The poet作者

Yan Jidao (about 1038–about 1110), also called Xiaoshan, was a Northern Song poet and the youngest son of the chancellor Yan Shu. He grew up rich, but his family later lost its fortune and he never did well in office. He often remembered the happy banquets of his youth, and his lyrics are full of deep, sad feeling. He and his father are called the Two Yans.

The mood意境

The first half is like a lively memory. She warmly pours him wine, and he drinks until his face is red. She dances until the moon goes down, and sings until her fan can stir no breeze. These two lines show joy that lasts all night, a picture both beautiful and full of sound. Then the second half grows quiet. After they parted, he could only meet her in dreams. In the last two lines they really have met again tonight. Yet he holds up the lamp and looks again and again, afraid it is only another dream. He has missed her so long that he cannot believe she is really there. This mix of surprise, joy and fear feels very true.
