Li Bai traveled to Peach Blossom Pool in Jing County, where a local man named Wang Lun welcomed him warmly, and the two became friends. When Li Bai boarded a boat to leave, Wang Lun came to the shore with others, singing and stamping to see him off. Li Bai was deeply moved and wrote this poem for him. It is usually dated to 755, though one view says the year before. There is also a folk story that Wang Lun lured Li Bai with ten miles of peach blossoms and ten thousand wine shops, but that is only a legend.
李白游历到泾县的桃花潭，当地人汪伦热情地招待他，两人结下了友谊。李白要坐船离开时，汪伦带着人在岸上踏歌送行。李白很感动，写下这首诗送给他。一般认为写于天宝十四载（755年），一说是前一年。民间还流传汪伦用“十里桃花、万家酒店”邀请李白的故事，但那只是传说。
Li Bai (701–762), also called Taibai and the Green Lotus Hermit, was a great Tang poet known as the Immortal of Poetry. He loved to travel among famous mountains and rivers and made friends wherever he went. His poems are full of imagination and say their feelings plainly. He wrote many poems about parting from friends, such as "Seeing Meng Haoran Off to Guangling at Yellow Crane Tower".
李白（701—762），字太白，号青莲居士，唐代大诗人，被称为“诗仙”。他一生喜欢游历名山大川，走到哪里都交朋友。他的诗想象丰富，感情直率。他写了很多和朋友告别的诗，比如《黄鹤楼送孟浩然之广陵》。
The poem begins in an unusual way: the poet says his own name, Li Bai, as if he were just talking, casual and warm. In the second line, the word for suddenly shows his happy surprise. He thought he would slip away quietly, but his friend came singing to see him off. The last two lines make a comparison. The pool may be a thousand feet deep, but it is not as deep as Wang Lun's friendship. Friendship cannot be seen, so the poet measures it with the water in front of him, and at once we feel how deep it is. The words are as plain as everyday speech, yet sincere and moving, and the poem became one of the best-loved poems about friendship.
这首诗开头很特别：诗人直接叫出自己的名字“李白”，就像在说话，又随意又亲切。第二句一个“忽”字，写出惊喜：本以为悄悄走了，没想到朋友带着歌声赶来送行。后两句打了一个比方：桃花潭水深千尺，可还比不上汪伦对我的情谊深。友情本来看不见，诗人借眼前的潭水来量它，一下子就让人感到有多深。全诗语言像大白话，却真诚动人，成了写友情的名篇。
