Versions of this poem differ in several words. This page follows the text in common selections such as the Gushiwen site and a published book of Meng Haoran's poems with modern translations: "lifting the curtain" in line two, "golden stove" in line five, and peach blossoms "opening" in line six. The Complete Tang Poems titles it "A Feast in Taoist Master Mei's Room on Qingming Day". There, line two says "opening the window" (with a note that another text says "lifting the curtain"), line five says "cinnabar stove", and line six says the blossoms are "falling" (with a note that another text says "opening"). Our source text reads the same way. Printings of Three Hundred Tang Poems title it "A Feast in Taoist Master Mei's Mountain Lodge", but they do not all use the same words. Both kinds of stove mean a stove for making elixirs.

Background

When Meng Haoran lived in retreat near his hometown, Xiangyang, he often spent time with Taoist priests. This poem is about a Taoist named Mei who invited him to his mountain home for a feast. Who Master Mei was is no longer known. In the source text the title says the feast was on Qingming Day; that is one view. The exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Meng Haoran (689–740), from Xiangyang, was a famous Tang poet of hills, rivers and country life. He is often named with Wang Wei. He lived in retreat at home for most of his life and never held office. His poems are light and natural, often about life in the hills and time with friends, like "Spring Dawn". This poem is relaxed and playful too, with the feel of a hermit's life.

The mood意境

At the start the poet is sad that spring is ending. Then someone comes to invite him, and his mood lifts at once. He calls the messenger the Blue Bird of myth and the Taoist the immortal Chisongzi. The stove, the peach trees and the wine are all made to sound like things from the land of the immortals, as if he has walked into a fairy world. It is a joke, and also a compliment to his host. The last two lines are the most fun: if this wine could really keep him young, then he will gladly get drunk. From being sad about spring to being drunk on immortal wine, worry turns into joy, and the poem feels light and lively.
