In the corpus the third line begins with "already" (zǎo shì). Common editions such as Three Hundred Tang Poems have "just the same" (děng shì), which is used here. The corpus lists it as number thirteen of a set; common editions title it simply "Miscellaneous Poem".

Background

This poem was written by an unknown person of the Tang dynasty and is included in Three Hundred Tang Poems. It is set around the Cold Food Festival, when spring rain falls and the grass and wheat are green. By custom, people went home at Cold Food and Qingming to sweep their family graves and be with their families. The poet is far away and cannot go home, so he misses it all the more. We do not know when or where it was written.

05

The poet作者

"Anonymous" means we do not know the writer's name. Many Tang poems are like this: the author's name was lost long ago, but the poem was good enough to be passed down. This one shows the feelings of an ordinary traveller far from home, so whoever wrote it, it still feels close to us.

The mood意境

The first two lines paint spring: fine rain, green grass, young wheat, willows and the river dike, full of life. But the poet cannot enjoy this lovely scene. The Cold Food Festival is near, and others are going home to their families, but he cannot. The third line says what is in his heart: I have a home too, but I just cannot get back. The fourth line is the most moving. The cuckoo's call seems to say "better go home", which only hurts more, so he begs it to stop. Of course the bird does not care about his feelings. The line is helpless and sad at once.
