Background

In 822, Bai Juyi went to Hangzhou as its prefect, the top official of the city. This poem is generally dated to early spring in 823 or 824. Qiantang Lake is today's West Lake. Bai Juyi rode his horse along the lakeside, saw the early spring scenery, and wrote this poem. While in Hangzhou he also built a dike on the lake to store water for the farm fields.

The poet作者

Bai Juyi (772–846), also called Letian, was a great Tang poet. His poems are so clear that, it is said, even an old woman who could not read understood them. While serving in Hangzhou he loved West Lake. After he left he still wrote poems missing it, saying that half of what held him to Hangzhou was this lake.

The mood意境

This poem is like riding around the lake with the poet. It begins by telling us where he is: north of the temple, west of the pavilion. He looks up: the lake is full, and the clouds hang low. Then come the small creatures of early spring. Orioles rush to perch on sunny trees, and swallows busily carry mud for their nests. The words "in several places" and "whose" show that spring has only just begun; it is not yet lively everywhere. Then he looks down. The flowers are slowly growing more, and the grass is only just covering the hooves. The words for "slowly" and "only just" catch early spring exactly. At the end he says he loves the White Sand Causeway on the east side best, shaded by green willows, and can never ride it enough. The whole poem is light, bright and full of joy.
