Background

Mount Xian is just south of Xiangyang, in today's Hubei, beside the Han River. Meng Haoran was from Xiangyang, so this was a famous hill of his home town. On it stood the Stele of Falling Tears for Yang Hu, a great minister of the Western Jin. Yang Hu often climbed Mount Xian too. He once sighed that countless wise men had climbed this hill since ancient times, and all had vanished without a trace. Meng Haoran climbed the hill with some friends, saw the stele, remembered these old stories and wrote this poem. Which year he wrote it is no longer known.

The poet作者

Meng Haoran (689–740) was from Xiangyang. He was a famous Tang poet of landscapes and country life, often named together with Wang Wei. As a young man he lived quietly on Mount Lumen near his home. Around the age of forty he went to Chang'an to take the imperial exam, but failed, and he never really held office. Because he spent most of his life near home, he knew the hills, rivers and old sites of Xiangyang very well, and loved them deeply.

The mood意境

The first two lines sound like a lesson about life. The world keeps changing. Generation after generation comes and goes, and that becomes history. Then the poet says the land and the old sites are still here, and now we have come to climb, just as Yang Hu did long ago. The middle lines paint a winter scene. The water has gone down, showing the shallows of the sandbar. The air is cold, and the great marsh far away looks deeper and wider, grey and endless. At last the poet sees Lord Yang's stele. Even a man as good as Yang Hu is long gone, while the poet himself has achieved nothing. Will anyone remember him? He cannot hold back his tears. The poem moves from a thought, to a scene, to tears, and its sigh over past and present feels natural and deep.
