Background

Qian Qi wrote this poem for his friend Yang, a remonstrator. A remonstrator was a Tang official whose job was to give advice to the emperor and point out his mistakes. Yang's full name is no longer known. A valley mouth is where a valley opens out, and Qian Qi had a small study there. Where exactly it was is not agreed. The poem describes the autumn scenery around the study. At the end it says a date has been made and the path is being swept, which is really an invitation for Yang to come and visit.

The poet作者

Qian Qi, also called Zhongwen, came from Wuxing, today's Huzhou in Zhejiang. He was a mid-Tang poet who passed the imperial exam in the Tianbao years. He was one of the Ten Talents of the Dali era, ten poets famous during the reign of Emperor Daizong. He was especially good at writing about hills, rivers and quiet country life, in a fresh and graceful style. His lines about a song ending, no one in sight, and a few green peaks on the river are much loved.

The mood意境

This poem is like a painting of a study in the hills. Springs and gullies circle the hut, and clouds rise by the vines, as if the poet lived inside a picture. The middle four lines are the best. The bamboo shines green, freshly washed by rain. The hills glow gold and red in the evening sun. The egrets, at ease, go home early. The autumn flowers last long and fall late. The poet uses the words love and fond, as if the bamboo and hills had feelings too. Everything is quiet and clean, and even time seems to move slowly. The last two lines never say "please come". They only say the servant is sweeping the path because of yesterday's date with an old friend. The host's warm welcome is hidden in this small action.
