The exact date is not known; it is usually thought to be a work of his old age.

The mood意境

This lyric is like three photographs, each of someone listening to rain. In the first, he is young, in a singing house lit by red candles. Even the rain sounds happy. In the second, he is in his prime, wandering on a boat. The river is wide, the clouds are low, a lone goose cries in the autumn wind. The rain is full of loneliness. In the third, he is old and living in a temple, his hair white. The rain is the same rain, but he is a completely different person. At the end he says sorrow and joy no longer matter: let the rain drip on until dawn. It sounds calm, but really he has been through so much that he cannot even speak of his grief.
