In the poetry database, the line about staying close to the lovely girls is missing one character, yǐ, "to lean on". Standard editions have it, and this page follows them.

Background

In the Song, a scholar who wanted to serve in government mainly had to pass the imperial exams. Those who passed the highest one had their names put on the "golden list". When Liu Yong was young he took the exam and failed. Feeling it was unfair, he wrote this ci, calling himself a minister in plain clothes who would rather drink and sing. A story says the ci reached Emperor Renzong. Later, when Liu Yong had passed an exam, the emperor said, "Let him go sip wine and sing softly; why does he need empty fame?" and struck out his name. The story comes from Song dynasty notebooks and may not be true. Liu Yong later changed his name, and only passed the exam late in life.

The poet作者

Liu Yong, first named Liu Sanbian, was a ci poet of the early Northern Song; sources disagree on the years of his birth and death. He knew music well, often wrote songs for singing girls, and created many new long ci. His songs were plain and easy to sing. People of his time said that "wherever there is well water to drink, people sing Liu Yong's songs." The pride and the disappointment in this ci reflect his whole life.

The mood意境

This ci sounds like a young man who has just failed an exam, grumbling and cheering himself up at the same time. He begins by saying he only "happened" to miss, and that the government has "for now" overlooked a talent. He does not admit for a moment that he was not good enough. Then he says: since there is no chance, why not just have fun? Why fuss over gain and loss? A gifted songwriter is already a minister, even without the robes. In the second stanza he goes to see someone he cares for, drinking and singing, and says this is life's greatest joy. The last line is the most famous: he would gladly trade empty fame for sipping wine and singing softly. It sounds carefree. But think again, and you will find disappointment and hurt pride hidden inside. It is because he cares so much that he has to say he does not care.
