Background

This ci is set in late spring. First the wind blows, then the rain falls, and most of the flowers are gone. The poet drinks with friends under the trees, and a lovely singer who pours the wine is there too. Some editions add a short note after the tune name. It says the ci was written after the rain, while drinking with his friends Ganyu and Caiqing under a flowering crab apple tree. Enjoying the last spring flowers, the poet sighs that neither spring nor happy gatherings can be kept.

The poet作者

Ye Mengde (1077–1148), also called the Hermit of Shilin, was a ci poet and scholar who lived at the end of the Northern Song and the start of the Southern Song. He served as an official in many places and spent his last years at Mount Bian near Huzhou, writing many notes and essays on poetry. His early ci were fresh and pretty. After living through the fall of the Northern Song, his style grew plain and strong. This one is among his softer pieces.

The mood意境

The first three lines show spring leaving bit by bit. The wind blows the flowers down, the rain beats them, and in the morning half the courtyard is red with petals. Then the fourth line suddenly looks up: long floating threads hang in the clear sky, drifting softly, as if trying to hold on to the last of spring. The second stanza turns to people. Friends hold hands under the flowers and drink one more cup. To the sad singer the poet says there is no need to frown, as if comforting her. Then he adds that he too has a tender heart, so in truth he cannot bear it either. The wine must end and spring must pass. He says this helplessness lightly, but it is real.
