Background创作背景

Liu Yong wrote this lyric while wandering far from home. The exact time and place are no longer known. For many years he was away from the capital, traveling from place to place. When he climbed high and looked into the distance, he often thought of the woman he loved in the capital. The lyric has three parts. The first shows him gazing from a tower on an autumn evening. The second shows him missing her in the capital. The third looks back on their happy times and sighs over their parting.

这首词是柳永在外漂泊时写的，具体时间和地点已经不清楚。他长年离开京城，四处奔波，常在登高望远时想起京城里的心上人。这首词分三段：第一段写秋天傍晚登楼远望，第二段写想念京城的她，第三段回想当初的欢聚，叹息如今的分离。

The poet作者

Liu Yong (about 987 to about 1053), first named Sanbian, came from Chong'an, today's Wuyishan in Fujian. He was a Northern Song poet. As the seventh child he was called Liu Qi, and after one of his posts he was also called Liu Tuntian. As a young man he failed the imperial exam several times and spent many years living it up in the city. Later he moved around as a minor official. He was a master of the long, slow ci form, and often wrote about the hardship of wandering and the sadness of parting.

柳永（约987—约1053），原名三变，字耆卿，崇安（今福建武夷山）人，北宋词人。他排行第七，人称“柳七”；做过屯田员外郎，又称“柳屯田”。他年轻时多次考试失意，长期流连在都市的繁华生活里，后来又四处做小官。他擅长写长调慢词，常写漂泊的辛苦和离别的伤感。

The mood意境

This lyric has an unusual shape. It has three parts. The first two have almost the same pattern of lines, like a pair of doors opening side by side. Only the third part pours out his heart. The first part is a wide shot: clouds fly over the hills, the sun sets by the river, autumn spreads for a thousand li. He has leaned on the railing so long that he cannot bear to look any more. The second part pushes the view far away. He cannot see the capital, and he cannot see her. Even the wild goose will not carry his letter, and only drifts down onto the islet. The third part turns inward. They had so many happy times; who knew it would all turn into such sorrow? The last lines feel very real. Every time he climbs high he thinks of her, and he is so sad he says nothing all day. In the end he can only walk quietly back downstairs. He went up to see far away, and he comes down because looking made it worse. That trip up and down holds all the helplessness of longing.
