Background

In the common text this ci has a short preface. It says, roughly: alone as a guest in "Chang'an", I saw the west wind of autumn again, with a bright moon and red maple leaves, and felt so sad that I wrote this tune in a certain musical mode. Here Chang'an stands for Lin'an, the Southern Song capital, today's Hangzhou. Zhou Mi was living alone in the capital, and the autumn scene stirred his longing for someone he had parted from. The exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Zhou Mi (1232–1298), who called himself Caochuang, was a ci poet and scholar of the late Southern Song. He knew music well and wrote polished, delicate ci. He and Wu Wenying were called the Two Windows, after their pen names. After the Song fell he refused to serve the Yuan and wrote books recording old Hangzhou.

The mood意境

The first stanza is almost all sounds and pictures: wide misty water, tall woods swaying in the sunset, mournful cicadas, the beat of cloth being pounded, leaves falling by the well, cold dew under the wutong trees. Each one shows the chill of autumn. Only then does the poet sigh about parting so lightly. His heart is full of things he cannot say, so he lets the crickets say them. In the second stanza he tries to sing his sorrow away, but the song grows sadder, until the jar is chipped. The fan put aside and the fallen lotus are like a person forgotten and a love that has faded. What he regrets most is that this fine early autumn passes for nothing, without that person beside him. At the end a flute sobs, and someone leans on the west tower under a pale moon. Is it the poet, or the one far away? The poem does not say. It leaves that to the reader.
