This page follows the common text in Three Hundred Song Lyrics and the Complete Song Lyrics, titled "He Xin Lang: Spring Longing", by Li Yu. Our source text names Pan Fen and differs in several places: the censer is "incense" instead of "gold", the shade is "thick green" instead of "drunk and heavy", she wakes "dazed" instead of "from a spring doze", the flowers lie "outside the gate" with spring "gone" instead of "outside the curtain" with spring "full and ripe", her "hair bun droops" instead of "her hair is messy", and two small linking words differ. The source also went through machine conversion, which left an old way of writing chén (to sink, deep) and an unusual variant of tì (lingering over wine); the standard forms are used here.

Background

This lyric is about a woman longing for a loved one far away, a kind of verse people of old called a "boudoir lament". No record tells when or why it was written. The first half is a late-spring day: drowsy with wine, she wakes from a nap, spring is nearly over, and he has still not come back. The second half moves into the night: she leans on the railing until the moon fills the west tower and the candle nearly dies, but he does not come. The common editions, Three Hundred Song Lyrics and the Complete Song Lyrics, give the poet as Li Yu; another view names Pan Fen.

05

The poet作者

Li Yu was a Song lyric poet. Nothing is recorded about his life, and the Complete Song Lyrics holds only this one lyric by him, so we know him only through this poem. Some sources put it under the name of another man, Pan Fen. Whoever wrote it, it is a fine Song lyric about a woman's longing at home.

06

The mood意境

Over a single day, this lyric draws out one person's waiting, slow and long. By day the incense burns out, the courtyard is still, willow fluff covers the path, and she wakes up listless, not even caring to do her hair. By night the moon rises and she leans on the rail, waiting and waiting. The candle grows dim and the tree's shadow moves away, but she never hears that familiar horse neigh. The lyric hardly ever says "I miss you", yet longing is everywhere: in the grass, the willow fluff, the lone goose, the jar sunk in the well, and the lonely mirror. The last line, "Who is there with me, facing this mirror?", is like a soft sigh that leaves the loneliness with the reader.
