Background

Zhang Zhihe was a Tang hermit who loved to fish on the rivers and lakes. It is usually said that around 774, when the calligrapher Yan Zhenqing was an official in Huzhou, Zhang came to visit him. The friends wrote songs back and forth, and Zhang wrote five Songs of the Fisherman. This is the first. It is said the song spread quickly, and even an emperor of Japan wrote songs in the same style.

The poet作者

Zhang Zhihe was a Tang poet. He was an official when young, but later quit and lived on the waters. He called himself the Angler of Mist and Waves. It is said he often fished without bait, because he did not care about the fish. He loved the freedom. This song is about his own life.

The mood意境

This song is like a bright, colorful painting. Far away is a green mountain, with snow-white egrets in the sky. On the bank are pink peach blossoms, and in the water swim fat fish. Then look at the man in the picture: a green hat, a green raincoat, fishing from a small boat. A fine rain starts, and a slanting wind blows. Anyone else would hurry home, but the fisherman says there is no need. He thinks the river in the rain is just right and does not want to leave. In only twenty-seven characters there are mountains, water, birds, fish and a man, and a heart that is free and loves nature.
