This is the text in the common editions of Three Hundred Tang Poems. Two characters, áo ("giant sea turtle") and cū ("coarse"), appear in the source in old forms and are written in today's standard forms here. The rare character chū, the name of a fierce beast, is kept as it is.

Background

In 817, under Emperor Xianzong, the chief minister Pei Du went to the front himself. General Li Su attacked Caizhou on a snowy night and captured the rebel leader Wu Yuanji, ending the Huaixi revolt. Han Yu was Pei Du's senior staff officer and was ordered to write the Stele on Pacifying Huaixi. The text gave most of the credit to Pei Du. Li Su's wife, the daughter of a princess, complained to the emperor that it was unfair. Xianzong had the stele pulled down and its words ground away, and ordered Duan Wenchang to write a new one. Decades later Li Shangyin wrote this poem to speak up for Han Yu's text. The exact year it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813 to about 858), also called Yishan, was a famous poet of the late Tang. He is best known for subtle, dreamlike love poems and his "Untitled" poems. This poem is different. It is direct and forceful, full of old, difficult words, and deliberately copies Han Yu's style. It shows how much he admired Han Yu.

The mood意境

This poem tells a whole story in three parts. Part one is the war. The emperor is wise, the Huaixi rebels are fierce, and Pei Du leads strong generals and 140,000 soldiers into Caizhou to win. Part two is the writing of the stele. The emperor names Han Yu, who accepts with a dance of thanks, goes home, cleanses himself, and writes it in one bold sweep. The stele is three zhang tall with characters as big as buckets. It is grand. Part three is the stele's fate. Someone slanders it, and it is pulled down and ground blank. But the poet says great writing is like the first energy of heaven and earth: it is already in people's hearts. Old bronzes are lost, yet their words remain. At the end he says he will copy it and read it ten thousand times, until his mouth foams and his hand is callused, so it can be handed down. The poem is hard and heavy, like a stone stele itself, and you can feel the poet's anger at the injustice and his deep respect for Han Yu.
