Underlined words have notes: tap one. The Pinyin button below shows or hides all pinyin. 一 and 不 are marked with the tone you actually say.

The corpus title lacks the word "climbing", and line twelve reads bēn còu, "rush and gather". The usual text in Three Hundred Tang Poems has "climbing" in the title and bēn zǒu, "run", in line twelve, followed here. The two wordings mean nearly the same.

Background

Ci'en Temple stood in Chang'an, the Tang capital. Its pagoda is today's Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. It is usually said that in the autumn of 752, Cen Shen climbed the pagoda with the poets Gao Shi, Xue Ju, Du Fu and Chu Guangxi, and each wrote a poem. This is Cen Shen's. Xue Ju's poem is lost, and Du Fu's is called "Climbing the Ci'en Temple Pagoda with Friends".

The poet作者

Cen Shen (about 715–770) was a Tang poet best known for poems about the far northwest frontier. He served twice with the armies there. When he wrote this poem he had not long come back to Chang'an. His poems have bold imagination and grand scenes, and this poem's picture of the soaring pagoda is no exception.

The mood意境

This poem takes us up the pagoda step by step. First we stand at the bottom and look up: the tower seems to burst out of the earth and reach the gods' palace. Then we climb. The stairs wind through the air, the corners block the sun, and the seven stories nearly touch the sky. At the top we look down. Birds fly below our feet and the wind roars beneath us. The mountains surge east like waves, and the trees and palaces by the road look tiny. Further off, autumn colors spread in from the west, and the Han emperors' tombs sit in a blue haze. Seeing such a wide world and thinking of centuries of change, the poet feels that fame and office are small things, so he says he wants to quit and follow the Buddha's way. The poem moves from a tall tower, to a vast view, to a thought in the heart, each step going deeper.
