Background

There are three "Qingping Tunes", and this is the first. In the early Tianbao years of Emperor Xuanzong, Li Bai worked at the Hanlin Academy in Chang'an, writing poems at the emperor's side. According to a Tang anecdote book, one spring Emperor Xuanzong and Consort Yang were admiring peonies by the Chenxiang Pavilion in the Xingqing Palace, and the emperor sent for Li Bai to write new song words. Li Bai wrote these three poems on the spot, and the court musicians set them to music. One view dates them to 743.

The poet作者

Li Bai (701–762) was a great Tang poet, known as the Immortal of Poetry. His poems are full of bold imagination and often speak of fairies and the moon. His time serving the emperor in Chang'an was short; after about two years he left the court. These three Qingping Tunes are famous works from his time in the palace.

The mood意境

This poem praises Consort Yang's beauty without ever describing what she looks like. The first line is the best. Seeing clouds, one thinks of her robes; seeing flowers, one thinks of her face. Clouds and flowers are lovely, yet they only remind us of her, so she must be lovelier still. The second line shows spring wind, a railing and dewy peonies. It seems to describe the flowers and the woman at once, so the two blend together. The last two lines compare her to a fairy. Where on earth could one find such a beauty? Only on Jade Mountain, or under the moon at the Jade Terrace. The whole poem is light and bright, like a painting touched with magic.
