In one line the corpus has chui (blowing on the hair at the temples), while the common edition has tan (sighing over the hair). This page follows the common edition.

Background

Ying Ti Xu has 240 characters in four stanzas, the longest tune in Song ci. This lyric is usually read as Wu Wenying mourning a lover who had died. They fell in love at West Lake in Hangzhou, then parted, and later she died. History does not record who she was. The time and place of writing are also unclear. The lyric mentions the trees of the old Wu palaces, so one view places it in Suzhou, another in Hangzhou. It starts with late spring around him, goes back to their love and parting, then to his grief after her death, and ends by calling back her soul.

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), known by the pen name Mengchuang, came from Siming, today's Ningbo in Zhejiang. He was a ci poet of the Southern Song. He never held office himself and spent many years in Suzhou and Hangzhou as an aide to officials, a kind of hired helper. His lyrics use rich words and many old stories, and the pictures jump quickly, so they read like layers of dreams. This long lyric is one of his best-known works, full of longing for a lost love.

06

The mood意境

This lyric is long, so read it as four pages of a photo album. Page one is now. It is late spring, he is ill and keeps his door shut, swallows come to tell him spring is ending, and his heart drifts like willow fluff. Page two is ten years ago. He ties his horse by West Lake, follows a stream of fallen petals into a kind of fairyland, and meets her. But the happy dream is too short. They part in tears and leave the sunset bank to the gulls and egrets. Page three is later. He goes back to look for her, but she is gone; the words about burying jade and fragrance tell us she has died. He remembers her bright eyes and lovely brows, the fishing lamps on the spring river and the little boat at the ferry. The poem he wrote on the wall is covered in dust. Page four comes back to now. He climbs high and gazes far, his hair half white, and her old marks are still on the handkerchief. He wants to write, but the geese cannot reach her, so he plays his longing on a zither and calls her soul. Picture follows picture and the longing grows deeper. The last line, asking if her soul is still there, is like a soft call that gets no answer.
