The source writes the word for heavy clouds with an old form of the character for sinking; here we use the modern one. Some editions write nián jī with a different first character; the meaning is the same.

Background

This ci comes with a short preface. It says that on Renri, the seventh day of the first month, in 1186, Jiang Kui was a guest in Changsha, staying at the hall of a deputy prefect. By the hall were a pond, bamboo and dozens of plum trees. He walked over the moss in wooden clogs, full of delight. Then he climbed the Dingwang Terrace, crossed the Xiang River and went into Mount Yuelu. When the fun was over, sadness came, and half drunk, he wrote this ci.

The poet作者

Jiang Kui (about 1155–about 1221), also called Baishi Daoren, came from Poyang in today's Jiangxi. He was a Southern Song ci poet and a composer. He never held office, lived on the help of friends, and drifted from place to place. He often wrote both the music and the words, in a cool, airy style. His sigh about going south and coming north is a picture of that wandering life.

The mood意境

The first stanza is a small picture of early spring. Under the old city wall the plum trees have only red buds. The pond is frozen, the snow on the wall has not melted, and the clouds hang heavy. It feels cold and lonely. Then a group of friends strolls through the bamboo path, laughing, and startles the birds off the sand. Suddenly the scene comes alive. The woods and the old terrace call to them, and the fun is at its height. The second stanza turns sharply. Going south, coming north, what for? the poet asks himself. Looking at the clouds and water of the Xiang, he only feels sad. The painted roosters and paper swallows remind him that a new year has come and more time is gone. He thinks of the West Tower where his friends are; its willows must be budding. But by the time he gets back, spring may be half over. The turn from the joy of an outing to the ache of missing home feels natural and true.
