The corpus writes the second character of the first line in an old variant form. Textbooks use the standard form; the word and its meaning are the same.

Background

Wang Ji lived from the end of the Sui dynasty into the early Tang. He held several small posts but never did well, and finally quit and went home to Longmen in Jiangzhou (around today's Hejin in Shanxi). There he lived as a hermit at the East Bank and called himself "Master of the East Bank". This poem describes an autumn evening there: what he saw as he gazed out, and the loneliness he felt. The exact year is not known.

The poet作者

Wang Ji (about 590–644) was a poet of the late Sui and early Tang. He loved wine, admired the hermit poet Tao Yuanming, and lived as a recluse. Most poems of his time were showy, but his were plain and natural. This poem is seen as one of the earliest mature five-character regulated verses of the Tang.

The mood意境

The poem opens with sadness: at dusk the poet stands on high ground, pacing, not knowing where his heart can rest. The middle four lines paint a calm scene. Trees everywhere show autumn colours. Every hill is lit by the setting sun. Herders drive their calves home, and hunters ride back with their game. Everyone has a home to return to, busy and content, and this makes the poet's loneliness stand out. The last two lines give the reason: no one around understands him, so he can only sing and think of the hermits of long ago. Autumn colours, the setting sun, people going home: inside this quiet picture lies a loneliness hard to put into words.
