Background

Meng Haoran came from Xiangyang, with his home near Mount Xian on the south bank of the Han River. For a time he lived as a recluse on Deer Gate Mountain, across the river. That mountain was where the Eastern Han hermit Pang Degong had lived in hiding. This poem tells of crossing the Han by boat at dusk and getting back to Deer Gate at night. We do not know the exact year.

The poet作者

Meng Haoran (689–740) was a Tang poet of mountains, rivers and country life, often named together with Wang Wei. For most of his life he held no office and lived quietly around his home town of Xiangyang, reading and wandering the hills. He admired hermits like Pang Degong, and in this poem he sees himself as following in Pang Gong's footsteps.

The mood意境

This poem is about a journey home, and also a journey from noise to quiet. It starts out busy. The temple bell rings, and people at the ferry push onto the boat, loud and hurried, all heading back to their villages. The poet gets on a boat too, but he goes the other way, into the mountains. Once he reaches Deer Gate, the noise is suddenly gone. There is only moonlight parting the mist, and the trees slowly coming into view. Walking on, he suddenly finds himself where Pang Gong once lived. The last two lines are the quietest: a rock door, a pine path, always still and lonely, with only me coming and going. Here we can feel the poet's calm and freedom, and a little loneliness too.
