Background

Su Wu was an official of the Western Han. Under Emperor Wu he was sent as envoy to the Xiongnu and was held there for nineteen years. They tried to force him to give in; he refused, and was sent to herd sheep by the Northern Sea, around today's Lake Baikal. Only after the two sides made peace did he return to Chang'an, by which time Emperor Wu had died. Visiting a temple to Su Wu, Wen Tingyun thought of this history and wrote the poem. We do not know when.

The poet作者

Wen Tingyun (about 812 to about 866; some say born about 801) was a late Tang poet and lyric writer. His poems were ranked with Li Shangyin's, and the two are called Wen and Li. His song lyrics are delicate and rich, and he is seen as the leader of the Flower Collection school. Unlike his usual soft, pretty subjects, this poem is deep, grave and heroic.

The mood意境

This poem is like watching an old film played back. It opens on the most moving scene: Su Wu at last meets the Han envoy, overcome with grief and joy. Then the camera cuts to now: just an old temple and a few tall trees, all far away in time. Lines three and four go back to the past. No geese in the northern sky, only the moon; at dusk the sheep come home and haze rises over the grassland. These lines do not say he suffered, yet we feel nineteen lonely years. Lines five and six set his return against his leaving. When he came back the palace had changed; when he left he was young. The last two lines are the saddest. Emperor Wu, the one he most wanted to see his loyalty, was already gone. Su Wu could only weep toward the autumn river for the years that had flowed away.
