Background

An old book tells a story. King Mu of Zhou drove his eight horses west and drank with the Queen Mother of the West at the Jasper Pool. When they parted, she sang and asked if he would come again. He promised to return in three years, but he never did. This poem builds on that story. It is usually read as mocking Tang emperors who believed in gods and wanted to live forever. We do not know the exact year it was written.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813 to about 858) was a great poet of the late Tang. He and Du Mu are called the "Little Li and Du". His poems use rich words and many allusions, which are stories from old books, so the meaning is often hidden deep. He wrote several poems that use old kings seeking immortality to poke at his own times, and this is one of the best known.

The mood意境

The poem starts from the goddess's side. She opens her window and waits for King Mu, but all that comes is the sad Yellow Bamboo song. The third line says, on purpose, that his horses could run thirty thousand li a day, so distance is no problem. The fourth line then asks: so why does he not come back? The poet gives no answer, but every reader knows it: King Mu died long ago. Even a king who met a goddess could not escape death, so what good is chasing immortality? The poet does not scold. He just asks one gentle question, and the mockery hits harder.
