The corpus title leaves out the friend's full name. Common editions call the poem "Seeing Shen Zifu Off Home to Jiangdong"; some use a slightly different word for "going to". The poem text is the same; some editions write "only" (wéi) with a variant character of the same meaning.

Background

Wang Wei wrote this to see off a friend named Shen Zifu, who was taking a boat home to Jiangdong, the land along the lower Yangtze. Nothing more is known about who Shen Zifu was. The willows and spring colors tell us they parted at a ferry landing in spring. We do not know the year it was written.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701? to 761) was a High Tang poet and painter, and a devoted Buddhist, called the Buddha of Poetry. Su Shi said his poems hold paintings and his paintings hold poems. He wrote many farewell poems; the most famous is "Seeing Off Yuan Er on a Mission to Anxi". His farewells do not weep or cry out. He lets the scenery carry the feeling.

The mood意境

The first two lines set the scene. The ferry landing by the willows is quiet. The boatman is already rowing, and the friend is leaving. The last two lines are the best part. Longing cannot be seen or touched, yet the poet says it is like the color of spring. Spring covers both banks of the river, everywhere you look. So does his longing, all along his friend's road home. Wherever the friend goes, seeing spring will be like seeing the poet's heart. The comparison is fresh and warm, and it makes the parting less sad.
