The corpus gives only the tune name. The ci has a short preface: "On the road at Pingxiang the sky suddenly cleared. Lying in my sedan chair I felt very drowsy, and rested a while by a willow pond." Common editions use its first words as the title.

Background

In his preface Fan Chengda says that on the road at Pingxiang, in today's Jiangxi, the sky suddenly cleared. Lying in his sedan chair he felt terribly sleepy, so he rested a while by a pond lined with willows. It is usually thought he wrote it in the spring of 1173, passing Pingxiang on his way from Suzhou to a new post in Guilin.

The poet作者

Fan Chengda (1126–1193), also known as the Lay Buddhist of Stone Lake, was a Southern Song poet from Suzhou. He served in many places during his life and once went as an envoy to the Jin state. He had a sharp eye for small everyday scenes, and his poems on farm life through the seasons are the most famous. This ci captures one spring afternoon on a journey, seen up close.

The mood意境

The first half is about the weather. After rain the sky suddenly clears, beams of sun slant down, the mist glows purple, and it is so warm that even a light fur coat feels hot. The weather makes you sleepy, the flowers make you tipsy, and after a nap your head is still fuzzy. Reading it, you almost want to yawn too. The second half is the cleverest part. The poet says this lazy, hard-to-name spring sadness is like the water in a spring pond. The water sways gently. The east wind is too soft to do much: it starts to make ripples, then stops. His mood is the same: a little sad, but not quite able to be sad. Turning a feeling you cannot see into ripples you can see is a fresh and exact picture.
