Background

Wang Jian wrote three poems called "The New Bride". This is the third one. It is in the famous collection Three Hundred Tang Poems under the title "The New Bride". In old times, a married woman had to serve her husband's parents well in her new home. Cooking on the third day after the wedding was an important test. The poet picks this one small scene and shows the bride being nervous but clever. We no longer know when it was written.

The poet作者

Wang Jian was a Tang poet. Sources differ on when he was born and died; he lived roughly from the late eighth to the early ninth century. He held a few small posts and was never rich. He was good at yuefu, a kind of song-like poem about ordinary people's lives. He and his friend Zhang Ji were famous together for these songs. His poems often show the small daily things of common people's lives, and this is one of them.

The mood意境

This poem is like a tiny story. In twenty characters it has a person, actions, and a hidden thought. On her third day, the new bride goes into the kitchen and first washes her hands, so we know she is careful and proper. But she is new here. She does not know if her mother-in-law likes food salty or mild, and she is afraid of getting it wrong. So she has a smart idea: let the husband's little sister taste first. The sister has lived with her mother for years, so her taste is the closest. The poem never says the bride is clever or nervous, yet we can feel both. Picture it: by the stove, the bride holds a small bowl of soup and watches the girl a little anxiously, waiting to hear that it tastes good. Some readers also see in it a new official carefully learning what his boss likes.
