Underlined words have notes: tap one. The Pinyin button below shows or hides all pinyin. 一 and 不 are marked with the tone you actually say.字下有虚线的,点开有注释。下方的“拼音”按钮可以显示或隐藏全部拼音。“一”“不”标的是实际读出来的变调。

This uses the text found in textbooks and common editions. The database has a slightly different third and fourth line (bǎ sì jūn, shuí wèi bù píng shì). The meaning is about the same: I show you the sword, and ask who has been treated unfairly.

这里用的是课本和通行本的文字。资料库里第三、四句作“今日把似君,谁为不平事”,意思差不多,都是把剑拿给你看,问谁受了不公平的事。

Background创作背景

No one knows for sure when this poem was written. It is also known by another title, "On the Sword". It is usually read as the poet speaking through a swordsman. Ten years spent grinding a sword is like a scholar studying hard for years. He has real skill now, and hopes someone will let him use it to do great things. Some say Jia Dao wrote it before he took the imperial exams, the old tests for choosing officials, but that is only one view.

这首诗写成的年月已经说不清了。诗题一作《述剑》。一般认为,诗人是借剑客说自己:剑客十年磨剑,就像读书人多年苦学,练出了真本事,盼着有一天能被人用上,去做一番事业。也有人说这是贾岛参加科举(古代考试选官的制度)以前写的,表达想要施展才能的心愿,这只是一种说法。

The poet作者

Jia Dao (779–843) was a Tang poet. As a young man he became a Buddhist monk, then left the temple. He took the imperial exams many times without passing, and only ever held small posts. He worked on every word for a long time. The Chinese word for weighing your words, tuī qiāo (push or knock), comes from a story about him. People paired him with Meng Jiao as two poets of thin, cold, hard-won verse. This poem, unusually for him, is bold and strong.

贾岛(779—843),唐代诗人。他年轻时出家当过和尚,后来还俗,考了很多次科举都没考中,一生只做过小官。他写诗特别认真,一个字要想很久,“推敲”这个词就来自他的故事。人们把他和孟郊并称“郊寒岛瘦”。这首诗却很少见地写得豪爽有力。

The mood意境

The poem has only twenty characters, yet it feels like a swordsman standing in front of you and talking. The first line, ten years grinding one sword, shows long effort and patience: ten years spent on one thing. The second line says the blade is now sharp as frost, but it has never been used. You can feel strength held back, waiting. In the last two lines he shows you the sword and asks straight out: who has been treated unfairly? He means: if someone has been wronged, I will stand up for them. The words are short and bold, full of a knight's spirit. Picture a man quietly sharpening a sword for years, and today he can finally use his skill to set things right for others. Today people still say ten years grinding one sword to mean working hard on one thing for a long time.
