Background

Li Qingzhao wrote this in late spring of 1135, when she was in her fifties and living in Jinhua, in today's Zhejiang. A few years before, the Jin army had taken the north and she had fled south. Her husband Zhao Mingcheng had died of illness in 1129, and most of the books and art they had collected together were lost. Alone and far from home, she wrote this lyric as spring was ending.

The poet作者

Li Qingzhao (1084–around 1155), who called herself the Lay Scholar Yi'an, was the most famous woman writer of ci in the Song dynasty. In the first half of her life she lived happily and in peace with her husband. After the Northern Song fell she lost her country and her home and fled from place to place. Her later lyrics are about loneliness and grief, in plain words but with deep feeling, and this one shows that well.

The mood意境

It opens with the wind stopping and the flowers fallen: spring is almost over. Late in the day she still cannot be bothered to comb her hair, because she has no heart to look nice. The line 'things remain, but he is gone, and everything is over' sums up the pain of losing her husband and her home. Before she can say a word, the tears come. In the second half she hears that spring is still lovely at the Twin Streams and thinks of going out to cheer herself up. But at once she worries: how could such a tiny boat hold so much sorrow? Sorrow cannot be seen or touched, yet she gives it weight, so heavy that a little boat could not carry it. This picture is fresh and true, and it has become one of the most famous lines ever written about sorrow.
