This uses the common text from Three Hundred Tang Poems, where line one says qī xián, "seven strings". Another version says qī sī, "seven silk threads". Both mean the seven strings of the qin.

líng líng: a clear, cool sound, like running water.
qī xián: seven strings. The qin, or guqin, has seven strings, so this means the qin itself. It is a very old plucked instrument played lying flat on a table.
sōng fēng hán: a cool sound like wind through pines. There is an old qin piece called "Wind Through the Pines", and the line hints at it.

Background

This poem tells how the poet felt while listening to someone play the qin. In the Tang dynasty, new instruments and new music from the west, such as the pipa, were very popular. People loved the lively new music, and fewer and fewer people played the qin. Some versions title the poem simply "Playing the Qin". We do not know when it was written. Many readers think the poet uses the forgotten qin to speak about himself: a person of fine character whom the world does not value.

The poet作者

Liu Changqing, also called Wenfang, was a Tang poet; sources disagree about when he was born and died. He was a master of five-character poems and was called "the Great Wall of five-character verse". His career went badly: he was twice sent away to lower posts, and he was proud and upright, so he often felt nobody understood him. The sigh in this poem that "most people today no longer play" carries that feeling of his own.

The mood意境

The first two lines describe the music. "Líng líng" is like clear running water, and "cold wind in the pines" is cool and still. We can almost see someone sitting quietly with eyes closed, listening. Then the last two lines turn: I love these beautiful old tunes, but people today do not play them. Lively new music has pushed the old sound into a corner. The poet is not only talking about music but also about himself: a person who holds to old, pure ways feels alone in a noisy world. The poem is very short. The music is cool and clear, and the mood is a little cold and lonely too.
